Head Coach Stephanie Dixon  wgbcoach@yahoo.ca

I started competitive swimming at the age of 12. I began my swimming career in Brampton, Ontario but moved to Victoria, BC in 2003 to pursue a degree in Psychology at the University of Victoria where I also competed for the varsity swim team. I represented the University at the national level CIS championships. I also participated in three Paralympic Games during my career; 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing where I won 19 Paralympic medals. I am the current World Record Holder for the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke in the S9 Para category. I retired as a swimmer in the summer of 2010 to pursue a career on the other side of the deck as a coach. I moved up to Whitehorse to take over as the head coach in the summer of 2011.

Coach Kayla Yeulet   kayla@northwestel.net

I began swimming at 7 years old when I joined the Polar Bear Swim Club while living in Yellowknife, NT.  When I was 10 years old my family returned to Whitehorse, where I was born and I quickly joined the Glacier Bear Swim Team.  I swam with the Glacier Bears until I graduated from high school in 2005.  While a member of the Glacier Bear Team I competed at 2 Canada Summer Games; 2001 in London, Ontario; and 2005 in Regina, Saskatchewan; as well as several AA and AAA meets.

After high school I attended the University of Calgary (UofC) to pursue a degree in Political Science.  During my first year of study I swam with the UofC Dino’s Varsity Swim Team for the 2005-2006 Swimming Season.  During my second year of study I decided to pursue academic interests over swimming and was recruited by UofC Dino’s Swim Club as a Coach.  I went on to coach for Calgary from 2006 to 2010, becoming the Assistant Head Coach of the Shouldice program.  While attending university in Calgary I also became a certified NLS Lifeguard and Red Cross Swim Instructor and worked at the University of Calgary Aquatic Center.

When I graduated in the spring of 2010 I left both Calgary and coaching for a short while and returned to Whitehorse where I was a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Whitehorse Aquatic Center.  I spent the following winter in South America, traveling to six different countries in four months.  When I returned to Whitehorse I decided to pursue coaching again and am excited to work with my home club.  When I am not at the pool, I work full time with the Yukon Government and enjoy hiking, ski touring, and ice & rock climbing in my spare time.

Coach Kathy Zrum   yukonzrumbums@gmail.com

I started my aquatic career as a competitive diver (speciality was 1m and 10m tower) and then a coach and swim instructor and lifeguard and assistant coach with Esquimalt Fast summer swim club. A move to northern BC, where pools did not always have a diving board, got me involved in more swim coaching.  I was a mom of two swimmers, Brendan and Jason, who have both been involved with the Whitehorse Glacier Bears  (for 14 years) since it was a summer swim club and then as the club transitioned to a year-long club.  Why did I get involved? Partly because I had the skills and knowledge to coach, and partly because I was just not very good at sitting on the sidelines watching my boys swim.

Over the past 15+ years with the club, I have coached at all club levels from the entry level to the high performance level.  I have been thrilled in the past to have also had the opportunity to coach at the Canada Summer Games and Western Canada Summer Games level.  This year I am very excited to be working with the new club squad the Brown Bears.

" I find is so very exciting to work with the talented and dedicated groups of swimmers with the Whitehorse Glacier Bears Swim Club. I enjoy teaching them skills to develop each individual into not only great swimmers but also great people."  I also love to find creative drill ideas that help swimmers improve on the fundamentals aspect of the sport of competitive swimming.

Coach Kat is currently a NCCP certified Introduction to Competition Coach with a new goal of becoming a Competition Development coach and earn more opportunities to coach at a higher level and be offered up opportunities through Swim Yukon to develop my coaching education. Kathy is also certified as a Learning Facilitator for the Fundamentals Coach and enjoys passing her knowledge along to new and developing coaches.

In her spare time she facilitates NCCP Coaching courses on the weekend and during the summer months can be found whitewater rafting on many Yukon rivers or paddling her sea kayak on our local lakes, or simply playing softball in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter months. A new passion for Coach Kat is photography and she can often be found out and about with her camera close by.

Coach Shereen Hill (shereenhill@hotmail.com)

I have been a part of the Whitehorse Glacier Bears on and off for 25 years.  I started as a swimmer from 1977-87.  I started coaching right out of High School in 1988.  I coached Mackenzie Downing when she a cub at 6 years old.  I have always had a passion for swimming and coaching.  It is a pleasure to be out there coaching swimmers of all ages.  I took a break for a few years while I went to school to become a teacher.  It was during this time that the club was transitioning from a summer club to a winter club.  I coached the Indigenous Games 2003 swim team.  We had 9 swimmers attend the event in Winnipeg Manitoba.  My goal as a coach is to ensure that all my swimmers try their best and have fun.  If they compete it is always about setting personal goals for each swimmer and being a good team player.  I see many parents that I used to swim with back in the day and that now have their children in club.

I started back with the winter club last March and have really enjoyed my time with the swimmers.  See you in the pool or on the deck…

Coach Kelly Patrick (kelly.patrick@whitehorse.ca)

This is my fifth year coaching with the Glacier Bears.  I am the single parent of two teenage boys and have worked at the pool since 1998.  I have a diploma in Early Childhood Education.  My mottos are catching them being good and learn through play.

Coach Jim Thompson

I have been involved with the Whitehorse Glacier Bears for the past 20 years as a parent, board member with Swim Yukon, official and as a assisting coach.  I first became involved as a parent with the Summer Club and have continued to be involved as both my daughter Jennifer and son Geoffrey swam with the club.  I have been helping to coach for the past 12 years many groups in the club and have had the opportunity to be the Team Manager for both Western Summer Games in 2007 and 2011.  I have also been the coach for the club at AA Championships and have assisted at AAA Championships and have assisted on deck for numerous meets.

The reason I like being the substitute coach is for the enjoyment of seeing the swimmers improve over the years and seeing the results of hard working swimmers as they advance through the different levels of swimming.

Over the past few years and continuing, I have worked with the Masters group and enjoy coaching swimmers my own age.
